Music is one of my favorite sources of motivation. As I grew up there were different songs that would stand out and become the platform that I would use to grow. I thought for this week’s blog post it would be fun to share the songs that have shaped my life.
Say You’ll Be There – Spice Girls
I have been and will always be a Spice Girls fan. I love their message of GRL PWR, and they helped lay the foundation for my passion to empower women.
Do You Believe In Magic? – The Lovin’ Spoonful
This song was the opening for a TV show I used to watch on ABC Family. This song just puts a smile on my face. I think as adults it is important to always look for the magic in life.
Simple And Clean – Hikaru Utada
Ever play the same Kingdom Hearts? In the beginning of the video game it started off with this question if anything is real and it went into this little music video that I just fell in love with. The video game was all about leaving what was safe and going on an adventure. My favorite lyric in this song is: “regardless of warnings the future doesn’t scare me at all”
Defying Gravity – Wicked
Wicked is by far my favorite musical! I have seen it 5 times in 4 cities. When I was a teenager I would listen to this song over and over daydreaming about a day I felt confident enough to break the rules and find my own path. Favorite lyric: “I’m through accepting limits ‘Cause someone says they’re so”
You Are Loved – Josh Groban
When I was struggling with depression, this song was on repeat! I needed to be reminded that the thoughts I was thinking were lies and that I was loved. I would imagine God singing this song to me, fighting for me even when I felt like I couldn’t fight for myself. Favorite Lyrics: “Don’t give up. Because you are loved. Don’t give up, It’s just the hurt that you hide. When you’re lost inside, I… I will be there to find you. If darkness blinds you, I… I will shine to guide you.”
Confident – Demi Lovato
Then came the song I needed to help me start fighting back! This stage of my life was all about wholeheartedly accepting who I was! Favorite Lyrics: “I used to hold my freak back, Now I’m letting go, I make my own choice, B*tch, I run the show”
Reckless Love – Cory Asbury
By this point in my life, I was learning what self-love was. For the longest time I had felt so unlovable, and then I got to experience the fierce love of God, and I was able to build the love for myself off of the unconditional love God has for me. Favorite Lyrics: “There’s no shadow You won’t light up, Mountain You won’t climb up, Coming after me, There’s no wall You won’t kick down, Lie You won’t tear down, Coming after me.”
A Million Dreams – The Greatest Showman
Okay let’s get real the whole entire soundtrack for “The Greatest Showman” should be on this list, but I thought that would be a bit much, so I picked my favorite. When I watched this movie for the first time I was just starting my business. I was actually getting my logo created. This was another version of stepping into who I was authentically. I decided to no longer fear what people thought of my dreams, I knew I could create anything I set my mind to, and I was going to! Favorite Lyrics: “They can say, they can say it all sounds crazy. They can say, they can say I’ve lost my mind. I don’t care, I don’t care, if they call me crazy. We can live in a world that we design.”
Wild Blue – Hunter Hayes
When you try new things fear is always there. I have been growing so much lately, but that doesn’t mean our emotions aren’t there with us every step of the way. This song really helped me center into growing, but also a reminder that emotions will be there every step of the way. Favorite Lyrics: “I thought I was strong, thought I was made of stone, suddenly the lonely hit. You think you know the part you’re playing ’til somebody goes and rewrites the script. It felt like falling, but it’s funny, ’cause I never touched the ground again”
Into The Unknown – Frozen Two
This is my 2020 anthem! I went to the movie theater multiple times to watch Frozen 2. It is an anthem to me because I am taking on a lot of new things this year. I am stepping into the person I have wanted to be for so long. Stepping into the unknown to grow into the person you want to be is so powerful! However, it is not always easy. Sometimes we try to ignore our calling, but I can’t ignore mine forever. Favorite lyric: “Or are you someone out there who’s a little bit like me? Who knows deep down I’m not where I’m meant to be?”
